KUCHING: Kuching City South Council (MBKS) not only wants to organise this year’s Mayor’s Walk for the fun of it, it also wants to create environmental awareness through the event.

According to its mayor Datuk James Chan, participants would be given bio-degradable plastic bags, and are encouraged to pick up any rubbish they see along the walk’s 5km route.

Participants, however, should participate with the intention to have fun and spend leisure time with their families.

“Our main objective is to show the outside world that Kuching citizens are people who are environment-conscious and love their city, which is why they love to keep their city clean at all times.

We also hope that outsiders would know that Kuching City is a city that promotes healthy lifestyle too,” he told a press conference at his office yesterday.

Chan also said those who wanted to participate in the Mayor’s Walk this year should register themselves to receive a free t-shirt.

The walk organising chairman Stanley Lau said MBKS was hoping to rope in at least 5,000 participants this year.

It was about 7,000 last year.

“We also have side events during the Mayor’s Walk such as lucky draw.”

Lau also said that City Jogger’s Club (CJC) would assist in the Mayor’s Walk technical aspects, and would deploy 120 volunteers to assist in running the event. Deputy organising chairman Lu Cho Heng and CJC vice president Song Khoon Sin were also present at the press conference.

The Mayor’s Walk will be flagged-off at the MBKS building at 7am on Aug 19.
