KUCHING: Over 600 people visited the UK Education Fair held at Pullman Hotel here and Le Meridien Hotel, Kota Kinabalu over the weekend to get detailed information about studies in the United Kingdom.

Students, many accompanied by their parents, took the opportunity to speak directly to representatives from more than 30 UK universities and colleges at the fair, the largest ever held in the two Bornean states, said a press release yesterday.

“As the next intake for UK universities and colleges will be in September, the fair thus offered a prime opportunity for students to obtain the latest information to facilitate their choice of university and college,” said Gabriel Liew, an independent educational consultant who co-ordinated the event.

Liew added: “Some participating institutions waived the application fee for students who enrolled on-the-spot while others offered scholarships, bursaries and financial assistance as incentives.”

The courses available ranged from business, arts to sciences at A-Levels, Foundation, Diploma, Undergraduate Degree to Postgraduate Degree.

In addition, a British Council official was present to explain about IELTS, the international English Language test required by most institutions in the UK.

The British Council is the joint owner of the official IELTS and students are able to take the test in both Kuching and Kota Kinabalu.

The participating educational institutions were pleased with the outcome and looked forward to welcoming more students to the UK.

Tom Lawrence, academic vice principal of Concord College said: “It was a very positive occasion for us. We met some excellent students with good knowledge of UK education. We will surely be back.”

Chris Neville, international officer of Northampton University said: “We met many very good potential students, would love to attend again next year.”

Besides, James Burnett, international director of MPW Schools and Colleges quipped: “The number of UK institutions attending the exhibition is impressive and many are top-ranked universities.”
