LUNDU: Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS) held its fifth youth camp to empower childhood cancer survivors at Union Yes Retreat here from July 21-23.

SCCS is a non-profit society which provides relief and care for Malaysian children suffering from cancer and their families.

This year’s camp organised in collaboration with The Champions was themed ‘Take the Lead’, to inspire survivors to become leaders and encourage them to face their fears.

“The annual camp for survivors aged 14 to 24 embraced learning outside the usual educational environment.

“Games and activities motivate the young survivors to realise that every day that they are alive is already a miracle,” SCCS said in a statement.

One of SCCS’s priorities was to have medical staff who work closely with childhood cancer patients day in and day out, in the camp with survivors.

“Medical staff face daily emotional challenges while working with childhood cancer patients. This encouraged them to continue and reaffirm their purpose.

“In this year’s camp, nine doctors and nurses participated actively during talks and activities, thereby strengthening their relationship with the survivors,” said the statement.

Maneesah, a participant said: “Youth Camp has been a great experience where games and activities were fun. I would love to come again.”

The talks and sessions were conducted by Ivan Evetovics, a passionate trainer and speaker. He highlighted and embraced the triumphs and struggles of survivors, to help them combat their fears, and use their experience as resources in taking the lead and making the most with their lives.
