MIRI: Riam Road Secondary School (RRSS) organises Maths Tricks Contest annually to inculcate, promote interest and love for Mathematics.

“RRSS is well-known for its emphasis on Science, Mathematics and English, being the only school in the country having its own unique JSME (Junior Science, Mathematics and English) examination syndicate that comprises renowned professors from the world’s top universities such as Oxford University, National University of Singapore and California Institute of Technology (Caltec),” said its chief executive officer Dato’ Dr Fong Onn Min in a press release yesterday.

“RRSS not only uses English as the medium of instruction for science and mathematics, it also published its own textbooks on those subjects, incorporating elements from foreign syllabi (Singapore, Hong Kong and England), with the aim of ensuring that its students are at least on par, if not better than their counterparts in those region,” said Fong.

He added that it is the only Chinese Independent school in Sarawak chosen by the Ministry of Education to represent Malaysia in the international TIMSS (Trends in Mathematics and Science Studies) for 2018/2019.

Fong said that even though English is used to teach science and mathematics, RRSS has emerged as the best school among 61 Chinese Independent schools nationwide for those subjects in the Junior Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) examination since 2016.

“It is worthy to note that all of RRSS students sit for SPM examination (in addition to UEC), thus whether UEC is recognised by the government or not will affect their future prospects.
