30 players from 31st Brigade Infantry to take part in rugby tourney

MIRI: A total of 30 players have been selected to represent the 31st Brigade Infantry at the divisional level rugby tournament.

The players were picked after the inaugural 31st Brigade Infantry Rugby Tournament final match held at the 20th Battalion Royal Army Regimen (RAMD) Sri Miri Camp Rugby Field here yesterday.

Rugby is one of the four sports contested at the 31st Brigade Infantry level this year.

“This competition serves as a platform for us to unearth talents which can be highlighted to represent the 31st Brigade Infantry in division level tournament as well as to represent the Kor Rejimen Sempadan,” said the 31st Infantry Brigade commander Brigadier General Dato Fadzil Tajuddin when officiating at the closing ceremony.

He congratulated the players and praised their effort during the tournament.

Fadzil also urged the participants to foster the spirit of sportsmanship and teamwork.

“We need to realise that it is not easy to become a champion.

“It requires strong commitment and wisdom in using available space and opportunity,” said Fadzil.

The inaugural rugby tournament was hosted by the Battalion 8, Border Regiment.

It was participated by six teams namely Battalion 6 (RS6), Battalion 7 (RS7), Battalion 8 (RS8), Battalion 9 (RS9), Battalion 10 (RS10) and the 31st Brigade Infantry Headquarters.

The three-day tournament concluded yesterday with RS9 emerged as the overall champion after defeating RS10 8-0 in the final.

RS7 came in third with 10-5 win over RS8.

The champions brought home a challenge trophy and individual medals.

Also present at the final were RS8 commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Shamsul Bahari Che Soh, the 31st Infantry Brigade chief of staff Lieutenant Colonel Mohd Zaini Hashim and members of Miri Division Rugby Association.
