2016

June 21: Bill Kayong was shot dead at a traffic light intersection near Emart Commercial Centre, Kuala Baram Bypass.

June 23: Datuk Stephen Lee went into hiding, after taking off to Singapore from Miri.

July 3: Datuk Stephen Lee left for Melbourne, Australia, from Singapore.

July 15: Mohamad Fitri Pauzi, 29, was brought to the Magistrate’s Court for the first time to face a charge under Section 302 of the Penal Court, for the murder of Bill Kayong.

July 15: Lie Chang Loon, 37, was charged for the first time in the Magistrate’s Court under Section 109, read together with Section 302 of the Penal Code, for abetting in the murder of Bill Kayong.

July 18: Datuk Stephen Lee went to Xiamen, China on board a flight from Melbourne.

Aug 18: Chin Wui Chung, 50, personal assistant to Datuk Stephen Lee, surrendered himself at Miri Central police station.

Augt 29: Chin Wui Chung was brought to the Magistrate’s Court for the first time under Section 302 of the Penal Code for the charge of abetting in the murder of Bill Kayong.

Nov 15: The Magistrate’s Court ordered Mohamad Fitri Pauzi, Lie Chang Loon and Chin Wui Chung to be transferred to Miri High Court for further mention of the case.

Nov 25: Mohamad Fitri Pauzi, Lie Chang Loon and Chin Wui Chung each pleaded not guilty in Miri High Court to the charge of murdering/abetting in the murder of Bill Kayong.

Dec 12: Datuk Stephen Lee was arrested in Putian, Fujian, China by the Ministry of Public Security (China) after he was extradited from the country.

Dec 13: Datuk Stephen Lee was arrested at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) upon arrival from China.

Dec 14: Datuk Stephen Lee was escorted to Miri and arrived at the city at 11am.

He was charged at the Magistrate’s Court at 2pm on the same day.

2017

March 7: The trial of all four accused went on for 13 days (March 7-10, March 13-17 and March 28-31) before High Court Judge Ravintharan N Paramaguru, with 28 witnesses being called to testify.

May 8: Date set for oral submission from both the prosecutors and the defence counsels

June 6: The High Court found the prosecutors successful in proving a prima facie case against Mohamad Fitri Pauzi and ordered him to enter his defence.

June 6: Judge Ravintharan ordered Datuk Stephen Lee, Lie Chang Loon and Chin Wui Chun to be released and acquitted from the charge of being accomplices in hiring Mohamad Fitri Pauzi and another man, who is still on the run, to murder Bill Kayong.

2018

April 30: The High Court set five days, from May 21 to 25, to hear Mohamad Fitri Pauzi’s defence statement.

May 21: Mohamad Fitri Pauzi gave his defence statement in the witness dock.

July 3: Hearing of oral submission from both the prosecutors and the defence counsels.

July 17: Hearing of reply submission from the prosecutor involving two issues raised by the defence counsels in their written submission.

Aug 10: Mohamad Fitri Pauzi was found guilty of murdering Bill Kayong, and was sentenced to death by hanging.
