SIBU: Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) will investigate the cause of bushfires over a five-acre area at Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce Road here last Sunday evening.

In giving this assurance, NREB Sarawak controller Peter Sawal said those responsible for this would face stern action.

On the haze that covered parts of this town yesterday morning, Peter pointed out the bushfires as the likeliest cause.

On applications for the open-burning permit, he said they would be kept in view (KIV).

Meanwhile, Fire and Rescue Department Sarawak director Nor Hisham Mohammad reminded the public against conducting open-burning in view of the current hot and dry weather.

In a statement yesterday, he stressed that any fire triggered from open burning activities would be difficult to extinguish due to the present hot and dry spell.

He also called upon members of the public to report to the Fire and Rescue Department should they spot any open burning or bushfires.
