SIBU: The newly upgraded Sungai Antu Market here is now equipped with a wheelchair ramp for easy accessibility to people with special needs (OKU).

A councillor of the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) Albert Tiang, who is in-charge of the market, said the market will reopen on Aug 18.

“After 31 years, the market has a new look after upgrading works was completed recently. It will provide better environment not only for customers but to the hawkers there as well,” he told reporters after chairing a meeting with the hawkers on Thursday.

According to Tiang, the market was upgraded at the cost of RM500,000 and it took about four months to complete the project.

The hawkers were relocated to a temporary location at Tapang Road to facilitate upgrading works. Besides the wheelchair ramp, he said the roof of the market was raised to provide better ventilation.

“Kitchen hood and exhaust fans have also been installed for the same purpose,” he added.

The market houses 13 food and drink stalls, fresh vegetables stalls and a stall selling pork.
