Mayor gives away ‘landscape’ prizes

MIRI: A resident from Kampung Lopeng Tengah Riam, Rangkut Abdul Hadi emerged champion in the Beautiful Landscape Competition 2018 in the traditional/village house category.

Second and third prizes went to siblings Mohd Yusop Drahman Leong and Mahani Drahman Leong respectively, from Kampung Lereng Bukit.

In the category for single/bungalow house, the winner is Nancy Thomas from Desa Pujut 2 with Stuart Meachen of Pelita Garden in second place and Dayang Madinah Abdul Rahman from Piasau Jaya – third.

Cecilia Bulan Lian from Taman Tunku is the champion in the terrace house category while Norizan Kasman @ Mohamed (Desa Pujut 2C) took second place and Sim Fung Lian from Taman Yakin placed third.

First in the category for detached house/corner-lot terrace, champion is Hiew Yun Foong from Desa Senadin followed by Saldina Abdul Sallam of Pelita Garden (2nd) and Hasnah Chi Bong from Taman Cinta Sayang in third place.

The top three winners of all four categories took home cash prizes of RM1,000 for champion, RM700 (second) and RM500 (third) plus trophy and certificate of participation each.

The primary school category was won by SJK (C) Chung Hua Miri, SJK (C) Chung Hua Pujut (second) and SK Pujut Corner in third place. Riam Road Secondary School is the champion in the secondary school category, SMK Lutong (second) and SMK Agama Miri (third).

The Skills Development Centre Sarawak (PPKS) won the category for higher learning institution, followed by Curtin Malaysia (second) and Industrial Training Institute Miri (ILP) in third place.

Pustaka Miri took the title for government building category while in second and third place were Miri Hospital and Road & Transport Department (JPJ) respectively.

Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd won the private building/ government linked company category, Syarikat Sesco Berhad (second) and Laku Management Sdn Bhd (third).

The category for hotel/resort was won by Jinhold Hotel & Service Apartment with Miri Marriot Resort & Spa (second) and Pullman Miri Waterfront (third).

In the category for places of worship, the champion is St Columba’s Church at Jalan Kubu, with Surau Al Falihin of SMK Agama Miri (second) and Chee Sing Khor Moral Uplifting Society of Jalan Jee Foh (third).

Miri mayor Adam Yii presented the prizes to the winners during the presentation ceremony at Miri Handicraft Centre on Friday.

Yii said the beautiful landscape competition has been organised by Miri City Council (MCC) since 1980 to encourage the people to support green projects at their respective area and turn the space into beautiful landscape.

He added the council would provide free flower and plant seedlings to support any green project conducted by schools, government agencies and non-governmental organisation (NGO).

Also present at the event were deputy mayor Julaihi Mohamad and chairman of MCC’s standing committee for city services Cr Jeffery Phang Siaw Fong.
