MIRI: Miri City Council (MCC) would not hesitate to revoke the permits of traders at Saberkas Night Market here, if they failed to attend the casting of trading lots next Monday.

Mayor Adam Yii said this when chairing a full council meeting here yesterday.

He was reacting to a recent news report about several traders at Saberkas Night Market who objected to the council’s normal procedure of drawing lots to determine the location of their trading areas.

“MCC market, traders and hawkers standing committee has made a firm decision on the issue regarding the casting of trading lots at Saberkas Night Market.

“Traders who fail to be present at the casting of trading lots on Monday would be considered as not interested in continuing to trade at Saberkas Night Market. We will revoke their trading permits.”

Yii said the main objective of the casting of trading lots was to rearrange (rotate) the traders’ areas of operations fairly.

The last casting at Saberkas Night Market was conducted four years ago.

“Total cooperation is thus sought from the traders; that they must come next Monday for the casting of the trading lots.”

There are 174 traders at Saberkas Night Market, and the operating hours are from 2pm to 11pm – Wednesdays to Saturdays.

Earlier, Yii announced that MCC emerged third overall in the Local Authorities Sport Carnival 2018 in Bintulu, running from Aug 9 to 11.

The MCC won gold medals in carrom and women’s futsal; attained silver medals from ‘congkak’ (traditional game), women’s tug-of-war, cross-country and golf; and three bronze medals in darts, netball and football.
