KUCHING: Cahya Mata Sarawak (CMS) Berhad subsidiary CMS Land Sdn Bhd and Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) yesterday handed over a completed caretaker house to the Sarawak Association for the Welfare of Intellectually Disabled Children (Perkata).

SEDC chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Hussain, who is also Perkata president, officiated at the event.

The corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative began in May last year when CMS Land was approached by SEDC to build a new staff quarters for Perkata.

SEDC also donated furniture and fittings such as curtains, dining tables, cupboards, and sofas.

Other contributors for fixtures, fittings, and furnishings were Grand Margherita Hotel and Riverside Majestic Hotel.

Abdul Aziz said the new building costing RM200,000 will bring meaningful and lasting benefits to the school and children.

He said work started in December and was completed in February.

“I believe this simple gesture has brought a lot of cheer and happiness to the needy ones, in this case we have constructed a proper dwelling place for the caretaker and his family. And this place is fit to be called not only a house, but more of a home for them,” he said.

He added SEDC has several CSR programmes that need corporate or private sector support.

Perkata aims to create a joyful and caring school environment, where the children can develop physically, intellectually, socially, and emotionally.

The society strives to enable each child to learn first to respect himself and learn to interact with those around him – eventually acquiring the skills to interact with others with confidence and independence.

The curriculum has been structured based on language and cognitive development, fine motor skills, self-help, reading and writing, and social development.
