KUCHING: SJK Chung Hua Pujut captured 23 gold medals to win the Miri 1st Sprint Championship at the Miri Public Swimming Pool recently.
Up and coming junior swimmer Deven Max Carroll was the star performer of the team as he bagged 12 gold medals in the Boys 10-11 years old 25m freestyle, 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 25m backstroke, 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke, 25m butterfly, 50m butterfly, 100m butterfly, and 25m breaststroke, 50m breaststroke and 100m breaststroke.
The exploits also earned him the best swimmer in his category.
His teammate Claire Lau Yu Rong also impressed by winning 11 gold medals in the Girls 9 & Under 25m freestyle, 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle; 25m backstroke, 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke; 25m butterfly, 50m butterfly; and 25m breaststroke, 50m breaststroke and 100m breaststroke to walk away with the best girl swimmer award.
Among the medallists were Wong Yao Yee who won bronze in the Boys 10-11 years old 25m freestyle and 100m breastroke; and Eric Chung claimed the silver in the Boys 12 years old 50m backstroke.
Accompanying the 15-member SJK Chung Hua Pujut team were teachers Hii Siew Yieng, Yii Ming King and Huang Lieu Sang.
The inaugural swimming championship was participated by 188 swimmers from various primary schools, clubs and academies in Miri, Bintulu and Brunei.
It was organised by the Miri Amateur Swimming Association with the main aim of unearthing new talents.
Miri MP Dr Michael Teo Yu Keng closed the event and gave away the prizes.
