KUCHING: The spirit of patriotism must be nurtured in every member of society to counter various challenges in today’s world, including the existence of social media.

According to Petra Jaya MP Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, the uncontrolled use of social media can become a threat – detrimental to the harmony and racial unity of any community.

“There are things that are untrue (and) incorrect, as well as false rumours being spread across social media by unscrupulous parties.

“This is why we have to be united to suppress any negative element brought about by social media via various platforms. One of the ways is through campaigns such as this ‘Kempen Kibar Jalur Gemilang’,” he said in officiating at the launch of campaign in Sri Kandis Hall of Kampung Siol Kandis here yesterday.

Fadillah said through such effort, he was confident that racial harmony and the spirit of loving the country would continue on and benefit the future generation.

“I hope that the initiative to run this campaign would go on; we pray that Sarawak and Malaysia would always be peaceful, harmonious and prosperous.

“This is one of the ways that we can bring our younger generation to celebrate National Day; thereby fostering the patriotic spirit in them,” he remarked.

Organised and run by Kampung Melayu village security and development committee (JKKK) and Kampung Siol Kandis Neighbourhood Watch, the ‘Kempen Kibar Jalur Gemilang’ event had people, young and old, taking part in various activities such as mass aerobics, colouring competition, as well as a contest to find the house with the best decoration using flags.
