John looks up at the roofless structure of Kampung Kuala community hall.

KUCHING: Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus is unhappy with the delay in the construction of the community hall at Kampung Kuala, Jalan Gedong in Serian.

He lamented that the RM200,000 project is behind schedule — it was supposed to be ready by July 23 this year.

“Now it is only 85 per cent completed,” he said, noting that the structure is still roofless.

“I went to inspect the project on Sunday and I’m really saddened with the work progress, although it’s already coming to end of August,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

Expressing disappointment over the delay, John urged the development committee or the relevant authorities to push the contractor to expedite the construction.

He said any further delay would only cause disappointment among the residents and even tarnish the image of the government and local assemblyman.

He also suggested that the development committee should scrutinise every contractor before awarding the contract to them to prevent any delay in the implementation of the rural transformation programme (RTP) projects in the future.

John said the community hall at Kampung Kuala was one of the RTPs that were approved and implemented last year.

He said this year, 27 projects had been approved, with some still waiting for fund disbursement.

Overall, John said he was satisfied with the implementation of the RTPs in his constituency and he wanted every project to be completed within or on schedule.

He said the RTPs in his area included the construction/repairing/rebuilding of places of worship of all religions, construction of agriculture roads, flood retaining walls, drainage, community halls and jetties.

Aside from the Kampung Kuala community hall, John also made a few other site visits during his walkabout on Sunday to see the progress of the RTP projects and to meet and understand the needs of his constituents.

Each Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) assemblyman is allocated RM5 million a year in the form of RTP fund to implement the various projects within his constituency.
