KUCHING: A group of strong supporters of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) in Sarawak is calling upon Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to consider launching Bersatu in the state by end of this year.

Led by Affendi Jeman, the group has gathered a total of 19,868 Sarawakians of diverse cultures and backgrounds to be part of Bersatu.

These individuals have filled out membership application forms, waiting to be processed and approved by the central leadership of Bersatu in Peninsular Malaysia.

“We target to gather 50,000 Sarawakians to join as members of Bersatu by end of this year, in the hope that Dr. Mahathir will do the launching end of this year,” he told a press conference at a leading hotel here today.

Affendi said among the prominent figures who had submitted their membership applications was former Mas Gading MP Datuk Dr Tiki Lafe.

Dr Tiki was also present at the conference, which registered some 100 supporters on the spot.

According to Affendi, those who have filed in their applications in the hope of becoming Bersatu members comprise Malays, Ibans, Orang Ulu, Bidayuh, Melanau, Penan, Kenyah, Kayan and Kelabit.

“We believe there are more Sarawakians out there who want to join Bersatu and we are confident of achieving the target of 50,000 by end of this year,” he said.
