Over 10,000 attend National Day parade

KOTA KINABALU: More than 10,000 people gathered to witness the state-level National Day Parade 2018 at Jalan Tun Fuan Stephens yesterday, symbolising the Sayangi Malaysiaku spirit among Sabahans.

To commemorate this year’s National Day, a total of 149 high-spirited contingents took part in the parade.

This year’s parade was divided into eight categories, namely the Secondary School Category, the Public/Private Institutions of Higher Learning (IPTA/IPTS) Category, the Private/Commercial Category, the Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) Category, the Ethnic Association Category, the Non-Uniformed Government Department Category, the Official Uniformed Government Category and the Vehicle Category.

The Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) emerged as champions for the Official Uniformed Government Category after they scored 94 per cent in points, while Polis Bantuan UMS and the Land and Survey Department (Enforcement Branch) were placed second and third respectively.

The Public Works Department contingent won the Non-Uniformed Government Department Category with the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and the Ministry of Trade and Industry finished second and third respectively.

The Sabah Tombonuo Association took the top spot in the Ethnic Association Category, followed by the Sabah Suang Lotud Association and Sabah Sungai Assocatio in second and third place respectively.

Meanwhile, Persatuan Pandu Puteri Malaysia (Sabah Chapter), Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB), Kadet Koreksional of SMK Bahang Penampang and UiTM Sabah’s Komander Kasatria won in the Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) Category, the Private/Commercial Category, Secondary School Category and the Public/Private Institutions of Higher Learning (IPTA/IPTS) Category respectively.

The prizes were presented by Infrastructure Development Minister cum state-level National Day 2018 organising chairman Datuk Peter Anthony.

“This year, we are doing something a bit different. We have included various ethnic groups from all the districts in Sabah. So as you have seen today, many ethnic groups had participated (in the event) from districts such as Tuaran, Nabawan and other rural areas,” Peter said.

He said the event was successful as it had managed to gather thousands of crowd.
