SIBU: Seasoned runner Su Lian Tiing could hardly believe it when she crossed the finish line to lift the 10km Ladies’ Open title of the Sibu BP Run 2018 held at Sibu Town Square yesterday.

For the past two consecutive years, the 25-year-old dentist attached to Oya Road Polyclinic had been playing second fiddle to the unbeatable Tho Siaw Khim who had been stamping her superiority in the past few editions of the event.

This time round, it was a different game altogether as Su rallied from behind before breaking Tho’s heart and at the same time, winning praises from other runners in her category.

“I never expect to beat Tho. I just tried my best and glad that I have finally won the Sibu BP Run title for the first time,’ she said when interviewed.

Both runners started off the run with caution with Tho keeping the pace, followed closely by Su and former champions Ling Mee Eng, Lee Leh Ha and Hii Yieng Ngiik.

At the last 1km, the duo broke clear from the pack and increased their pace before Su surprisingly overtook Tho.

From then on, it was all Su as she led till the finishing line.

Su is no stranger to long distance run as she has also captured several accolades in her running career.

She won the Kuching Marathon Run 2017, Bintulu Chung Hua Hill Challenge 2017 and Bintulu Half Marathon Run 2018.

She finished second in Sibu Tower Run last year.

Su have been active in the sport since three years ago when she returned from her studies in Kuala Lumpur.

During her school days, she took part in cross country and her best result was eighth placing in MSSM cross country run in Penang.

She will travel to Bintulu this month to compete in the Bintulu Farley Run on Sept 23 and Bintulu Petronas on Sept 29.

‘I am not aiming for any podium finish in these two runs as my whole objective is to keep myself fit by participating in the runs,” she said.

Asked whether she will be taking part in the 2019 edition of the BP Run, Su gave an affirmative reply, saying the run is not only a good platform to foster friendship but also an event that help shape character and to stay healthy.
