SIBU: Taekwondo is a good form of self-defence exercise which helps to shape the character of an individual.

This was how Rajang Taekwondo Club (RTC) adviser Datuk Kapitan Janet Lau summed up the sport while advising that students should spend their time wisely by getting involved in healthy activities such as taekwondo.

“It’s a good sport that not only helps build self-confidence but also mould an individual into becoming a responsible and a disciplined person,” she said.

Lau was speaking at the opening of RTC Inter-Primary and Secondary Schools Taekwondo (Poomsae) Kyorugi Championship held here yesterday morning.

More than 400 exponents from 15 teams are taking part in the two-day championship.

The participating teams are SMK Lanang, SM Kiang Hin, SM Wong Nai Siong, SMK Kwong Hua, SMK Chung Hua, SMK Deshon, RTC Main Gym, Meradong Taekwondo Club, Bumi Kenyalang Taekwondo Club, SJK Thai Kwang, SJK Chung Cheng, SJK Su Lai, SJK Chung Hua, SJK Sacred Heart and SK St Mary.

Lau noted that RTC, under the guidance of coach Thomas Tang, have produced many taekwondo exponents who have represented Sarawak at the national championship.

“Train hard and you can always be the next champion in the making,” she encouraged the athletes.

A taekwondo demonstration was also showcased by several senior exponents from RTC.
