KUCHING: Road resurfacing and drainage repair projects costing some RM8.8 million are now underway for the Batu Kawah constituency under the Malaysian Roads Records Information System (Marris) Fund.

Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also Batu Kawah assemblyman, said the funds approved for 2018 were in addition to the RM5 million for Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) projects.

“The release of the list of projects demonstrate our transparency in managing funds and delivering projects to Batu Kawah constituency,” he told a press conference yesterday.

Dr Sim said 36 roads have been identified for resurfacing works involving a cost of about RM2.3 million, while 22 areas have been selected for drainage maintenance projects costing RM6.5 million.

“These projects, a few of which have already commenced, will be implemented by either the
local council or the Public Works Department (JKR),” he said.

“The projects will be done by stages with the worst areas to start first so to be more efficient instead of scattering around.”

He added last year Marris funds worth over RM5.42 million were allocated for 53 projects implemented by the Padawan Municipal Council and 12 projects costing RM3 million by JKR.

Dr Sim added an update on drainage and river cleaning projects for the area would be released soon.

Among those present were Tan Kai – a political secretary to the Chief Minister, Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Batu Kawah chairman Fang Jee Khin, branch deputy chairman Lim Ah Ted, and branch Women chief Kapitan Voon Shwu Phin.
