KUCHING: Sarawak PKR women members have been tasked to be the eyes and ears of the PH federal government by highlighting issues and needs of the people in their area.

PKR Wanita deputy chief Haniza Talhar said members may also talk directly to any PH elected representative (MP) who will in turn relay the message to the federal government.

“We have the Minister of Works Baru Bian from Sarawak in the federal cabinet. We hope that the ladies will assist him to make all the infrastructure improvements in Sarawak,” said Haniza after chairing a workshop on ‘Women Leadership’ held at a leading hotel here yesterday.

From the workshop, Haniza deduced that their women members in Sarawak showed they were preparing early for the state election which could be called any time before 2021.

This she adds is a positive signal for PKR Wanita who are growing in their membership drive since the forming of the new federal government after the 14th General Election.

She noted that there are at least 57,000 PKR women members in Sarawak – out of the 400,000 plus women members in Malaysia.

“I am happy to be given the chance to meet all the fifty women leaders here. All of whom are representing their respective PKR branches in the state,” said Haniza who is also Lembah Jaya state assemblywoman.

Haniza also expressed her gratitude to the new members who see PKR as a choice for their political involvement and playing a role in the government’s decision making.

On another note, Haniza said the party will be aiming to have a minimum of at least 30 per cent of women candidates in the next state election.

However, potential candidates she added have to fulfill certain criteria and the merits to contest in an election.
