ALOR SETAR: The Malaysian Border Control Agency (AKSEM) in Kedah seized cigarettes worth RM1.749 million at a house here on Saturday, making the haul its biggest success so far.

“This is AKSEM Kedah’s biggest success  in confiscating contraband cigarettes,” Bukit Kayu Hitam AKSEM Commander, ASP Mohd Khairi Abdullah told a press conference yesterday.

He said that based on intelligence and information from the public, AKSEM personnel raided the house which had been turned into an illegal cigarette store in Lavender Park, Jalan Lencong Barat, here.

“The house was unlocked and there were no occupants at the time of the raid,” he said.

Among the cigarettes seized were  ‘John’ brand cigarettes valued at RM656,000 and Kretek cigarettes worth RM64,080 with unpaid duty  RM1.042.800 million and RM576,720 respectively.

He said the cigarettes were also found in four multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) parked at the premises.

“The vehicles included a Toyota Estima and Toyota Velfire. Our checks showed that both were cloned vehicles,” he said.

Mohd Khairi said the vehicle had just been filled with cigarette cartons and were to be distributed throughout Kedah later in the evening. — Bernama
