Murder accused gets 10 years’ jail, cane for causing hurt to another man

MIRI: A man accused of killing his neighbour three years ago was yesterday jailed for
10 years and ordered to be caned five times for injuring another man in 2016.

Judge Steve Ritikos delivered the sentence on Jack Reong, 39, from Kampung Lusut in Taman Tunku here after the accused pleaded guilty under Section 326 of the Penal Code.

The offence was committed at 8.30pm on Oct 20, 2016 at an unnumbered rented house in Riam Jaya here when the accused hacked the wrist of a 46-year-old man using a samurai sword.

The court ordered the jail sentence to take effect from the date of his arrest on Aug 19.

ASP Koay Kok Ping prosecuted while the accused was not represented.

Earlier, Jack was produced in the Magistrate’s Court where he was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for killing his neighbour.

He is alleged to have murdered Mingu Nanggai, 44, between 8pm on May 29 and 2.30am on May 30, 2015 at Kampung Lusut Jaya here.

No plea was recorded from the accused, who faces the mandatory death penalty if found guilty.

Prosecuting officer ASP Mary Ong applied for a new date for further mention pending a chemist report.

Magistrate Zuraini Ali Musa granted the application and set Oct 10 for further mention, and ordered the accused to be further detained in Miri Central Prison pending the date.
