KOTA SAMARAHAN: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan hopes that the Ministry of Education (MOE) under the new government will build a teaching hospital for Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas).

He said Unimas has long wanted to have its own hospital like any other public university with a faculty of medicine.

“Before, perhaps the federal government was less concerned with Unimas’ efforts to have a university hospital. So we hope that with the present ministry under the leadership of Dr Maszlee (Malik), Unimas’ dream to own a university hospital can be realised.

“Sometimes, we feel annoyed when we learnt that a new university that just applied got the approval, and Unimas which has been longing until this day does not get the approval yet,” he added.

Awang Tengah, who is also Minister of Industrial Development and Entrepreneur, highlighted this when addressing the Patriotic Cultural Concert 2018 organised by Unimas in collaboration with Student Development Division (BPMs) and MOE’s Higher Education Department held at DeTAR Putra Unimas here on Friday night.

Awang Tengah pointed out that the people want education development in Sarawak be strengthened.

“As such, we urged for the works on upgrading and rebuilding dilapidated schools and teacher’s hostels to be implemented urgently.”

Minister of Education Dr Maszlee Malik, Minister of Education, Science and Technological Research Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong, Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office (Integrity and Ombudsman) Datuk Talib Zulpilip, Unimas Board of Directors chairman Tan Sri Datuk Seri Sulong Matjeraie and Unimas vice chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi were present at the function.
