KUALA LUMPUR: DAP has maintained its stand that the Sedition Act 1948 should be abolished, says its deputy chairman Gobind Singh Deo.

Gobind Singh, who is also Communications and Multimedia Minister, said abolishing the Sedition Act was part of the Pakatan Harapan election manifesto.

“The Sedition Act is arbitrary and subject to abuse. It has been used as a political tool to stifle political dissent here in Malaysia.

“We have consistently called for its repeal and that position remains,” he said in his posting on Facebook and Twitter accounts yesterday.

He said while he agreed that action should be taken against former Inspector-General of Police Tun Hanif Omar for the somewhat reckless and baseless allegations he made against DAP veteran leader Lim Kit Siang, resort should not be made to the Sedition Act for that purpose.

Gobind Singh’s statement came amidst the criticism against DAP for its inconsistency in the call for sedition probe against the former IGP.

On Sunday, Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh, who is acting as legal counsel for Lim, had called on the police to investigate Hanif under the Sedition Act 1948. — Bernama
