KUCHING: Diabetes Malaysia Sarawak Branch (DMS) will be organising a karaoke marathon at the East Atrium of Vivacity Shopping Mall on September 22 from 12 noon to 10pm.

Its chairman Dr William Voon said the event, dubbed ‘Karathon 2018’, is the first to be organised here and will feature karaoke performances by people from all walks of life who have been sponsored to sing for a good cause.

“The Karathon is not a singing competition. It is a light-hearted and enjoyable way to raise funds to support our diabetes awareness activities which require fundings of RM30,000 to RM50,000 annually,” he told a press conference at DMS Diabetes Resource Centre here yesterday.

Among the activities held by the association throughout the year include diabetes awareness talks, fortnightly diabetes screening and case finding projects, quarterly health screening projects at villages, weekly exercise sessions at Diabetes Resource Centre, twice yearly food camps to teach diabetics on proper meals, annual diabetes camp and more.

Dr Voon said so far, DMS has received confirmation from doctors, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), hotels as well as Elvis Presley impersonators who will be singing their hearts out at ‘Karathon’ 2018, which is expected to be officiated by Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian.

“Those who wish to sponsor someone to sing be it their family members, colleagues or even an elected representative, they can do so by donating a minimum of RM50 to ‘Diabetes Malaysia Cawangan Negeri Sarawak’ under the association’s Hong Leong Bank Account No. 01600203512.

“Please indicate the name and contact details of the singer sponsored on the bank-in chit and fax to 082-239483, email [email protected] or Whatsapp to 012-8091038 upon payment,” he explained.

He added that the sponsor has to also fill in a ‘Karathon 2018’ card which can be obtained from the Diabetes Resource Centre at Banglo Angerrik, Jalan Maxwell here.

“The deadline to submit the card is on September 15 and all collections must be submitted to the Diabetes Resource Centre (082-239486), Allison Lim (016-8006621) or Dorothy Chong (013-8112981) by then.”
