SIBU: Members of the public are invited to join the Family Beach Clean Up on Sept 16 at Pantai Kala Dana, Mukah.

Volunteer Loh Yu Yee who initiated the event, said it will start at 3.30pm with registration and grouping before proceeding to clean up activities along the 1km beach.

“We hope to get 500 participants. Currently, 200 participants have registered,” she said adding that this will be the second beach clean-up this year, the first being held in Oya, Dalat on July 22.

“In the first clean-up about 300 volunteers collected 2,279kg of rubbish in one hour
along the 600metres beach,” she said.

Mukah requested for a similar initiative following the success in Oya and Loh has been travelling to Mukah every Saturday to hold meetings with volunteers to make the event a reality.

“The idea of beach clean-up is not a one-off activity as we want to create awareness of loving our environment and ocean.

“The beach in Mukah is very dirty due to lack of awareness on keeping our environment clean. We hope that this event can raise awareness among the locals,” she added.

“I observed that families would come together to clean the beach, and then from then on, folks will clean the beach every year,” Loh concluded.
