KAPIT: The proposed river bank/slope protection works on the Kapit Waterfront will add a new and beautiful landscape to Kapit Town When completed.

Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit said this after visiting the site yesterday.

To be developed from Kapit Terminal to Kubu cargo Jetty, the proposed project will take 15 months to complete. The contractor has begun earthworks for the project.

“In view of the popular water sports here like remote control boat races, power boat racing, rafting and canoeing held at Kapit Waterfront, there is a need to carry out landscape and beautification projects at Kapit Waterfront to provide a proper place and shelter for water sports enthusiasts and spectators,” he said, pointing out that the town has 19 water sports clubs.

He believed that water sports have great potential to attract visitors to Kapit.

“Powerboat is Kapit’s specialty. The locals are talented in powerboat design. They are creative and innovative in modifying engines for racing. The powerboats designed here are accepted throughout Sarawak as one of the best. Over the years  Kapit has earned a reputation of producing very good powerboat racers,” he added.

He said water sports especially power boat races held at the Waterfront, attracts competitors from other districts like Marudi, Mukah, Limbang, Bintulu, Sarikei, Kanowit, Song and Belaga.

In this regard, Kapit has great potential to become a centre of water sports in Sarawak, he enthused.

He thanked the government for building more facilities for the sports along the river bank for the convenience of the competitors, enthusiasts and spectators.
