KUCHING: Mydin Petra Jaya held a host of activities yesterday as part of the MyMerdeka programme organised by the Information Department Malaysia together with Mydin Mohamed Bhd.

A children’s colouring competition saw over 200 children in two categories – ages six to seven and ages eight to nine, competing for 10 prizes.

Dapur Antap had 10 teams of two persons cooking up a dish picked in a draw. In the final today, six teams have to cook three dishes each.

The Gardenia Challenge started yesterday with two rounds of eight participants with two more sessions today and tomorrow.

The first three competitors to finish eating the bread will be declared winners with five consolation prizes up for grabs at each session.

This third annual MyMerdeka programme is held in Penang, Perak, Selangor, Johor and Sarawak to enhance unity and tolerance among local communities.

Other activities lined up include Teh Tarik Challenge, Bermukun, Cats FM Mini Concert, handicraft booth, MyMerdeka Roadshow and MyPledge.

In the ‘Shop, Fly and Drive Contest’, customers who purchase RM150 and above at any Mydin outlets stand a chance for prizes in the form of six Proton Suprima cars, 12 Modenas motorcycles, 12 return air tickets (KL-Phuket-KL), pearl jewellery from Wah Chan, Mydin shopping vouchers and many more.

In an interview, septuagenarian Meruding said he usually spends around RM300 to RM400 per trip as the family is spoilt for choice at Mydin, and does not mind driving all the way from Kota Samarahan.

As for policeman Boinan Kipli, he said: “I bring my family to Mydin every time I come back here as I’m stationed in Sarikei. It is well stocked with wide aisles, making it easy to push a grocery cart.”

He added he loves taking his family to shop at Mydin because it has everything they need at reasonable prices.

Indian national Udhaya Kumar, 39, who is an engineer, said he drove all the way from Taman BDC as Mydin stocks basic Indian grocery items.

“We usually come once a month and buy what we need in bulk to reduce the number of shopping trips,” said Udhaya, who was accompanied by his wife and young son.
