MIRI: Two Leo clubs from Kolej Tun Datu Tuanku Haji Bujang (KTDTHB) and Riam Road Secondary School (RRSS), together with Lions Club of Miri Host and Lions Club of Miri Mandarin, brought cheer to a group of less privileged students of the school on Friday.

The students were treated to a round of bowling and a sumptuous tea break at Megalanes Bowling Centre here besides being provided with books and stationery.

Joining the outing were Miri MP Dr Michael Teo and wife Diana Yeoh, Lions Club of Miri Host president Willie Chuo and first vice-president John Ling, Lions Club of Miri Mandarin president Lina Hu, KTDTHB Leo Club president Mary Shas Rowin Umpok, RRSS Leo Club president Christal Sim, as well as several teachers.

According to organising chairperson Renee Ping Laing from Leo Club of KTDTHB, a total of RM3,600 was spent to benefit some 20 students.

“The Leo clubs and Lions clubs each sponsored RM1,600 for the bowling games, tea break, books and stationery,” she said, adding the students and organising committee were delighted that Dr Teo and the teachers were able to spend time with them. Ranee added the less privileged students are from the rural areas and live in the school’s hostel.

“Hostel students rarely get to go out to the city and we hope they enjoyed this simple outing,” she added.

Dr Teo, who has been supporting this annual initiative since it started in 1993, presented a personal contribution in the form of a RM100-angpow to each of the students.

“My advice is to never give up and study diligently. Education is the key to a brighter future,” he said during the gathering.
