DOSH trains 113 OSH coordinators

SIBU: The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Sarawak has trained and certified 113 participants from small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across Sarawak as Occupational Safety and Health Coordinator (OSH-C) so far this year.

“This year alone, the department has carried out 12 OSH Coordinator workshops from March to August and trained 113 participants who received their OSH Coordinator certificates with 61 from Kuching and 26 from Miri and Sibu respectively,” said Dosh Sarawak director Dr Nor Halim Hasan.

Nor Halim said this while officiating at OSH-C appreciation ceremony for SME cum dialogue with associations and OSHWA (Occupational Safety and Health Workplace Assessment Checklist) 2018 workshop here yesterday.

The participants had to complete three workshops, namely OSH at workplace, followed by HIRARC (hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control) and WISE (workplace improvement SMEs).

Nor Halim said the 26 participants who received their certificates yesterday was the first batch from Sibu.

He added that the department intends to strengthen cooperation with SME associations in Sarawak through various programmes.

He hoped SMEs would seize such opportunity provided and attend the free workshops, while encouraging participants to help instil awareness among other SME operators on the concerns given by the department on the development of OSH in this sector (SME).

At the function, the department also announced the three best participants, namely Chien Mei Chen (Rong Jiang Sdn Bhd), Ting Tiew Hing (Spices & Seasoning Sibu) and Wong Sii Chung (Chee Lian Industry Sdn Bhd).

Dosh Sibu chief Calvin Chin also spoke at the function.

Among those present were Dosh Sarawak section head of Small Medium Industry Christy Claire de Guzman, Human Resources Development Fund (HRDF) director for East Malaysia Tinah Jerome, United Chinese Association (UCA) Sibu division president Ngieng Ping Sing, Sibu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) representative Wong Ngie Ing and Electrical Association of Sarawak and Sabah chairman Hii Hua Chuon.
