Mohamad Rafie was left bedridden after suffering a spinal cord injury at his thoracic vertebrae section four a year ago.

MIRI: A spinal cord injury patient, Mohamad Rafie Rayyah Abdullah,20, is appealing for public donation as he and his family are struggling to make ends meet and trying to cope with his medical needs.

Miri Ability Services Association chairman, Boon Foo Ping told reporters here yesterday that the youth was left bedridden after he suffered from a severe injury on his thoracic vertebrae section four last year which needed more surgeries due to wounds on the back and thighs.

“When I first met Mohamad Rafie, he was very weak and I was told that the wounds on his back and thighs worsened due to him lying on his back for too long as he was unable to move. Thus surgeries are needed immediately to improve the condition,” he said.

He also saidthat Rafie’s family is facing difficulty in keeping up with the expensive medical bills as his father does odd jobs while his mother who previously worked as a cleaner had to quit her job to take care of him.

“His mother decided to quit her job and looked after him after seeing Rafie’s injury and overall condition had taken a toll on his health and emotional well-being.

“The association is currently working on helping Rafie to raise funds in order to purchase necessities such as cotton pads, gauze, sterilising cleansing liquid, and medicine as well as giving financial support to help his family during this difficult time,” said Boon.

Boon, a quadriplegic, set up the association this year after getting the approval from the Registrar of Societies (ROS) this year with the aim to reach out to those who are in need of physical and emotional support.

“I hope to help the physically handicapped to build up their confidence and create a friendlier community that enable them to feel comfortable socialising in.”
