Silent Run 2.0 draws 1,500 in conjunction with Deaf Awareness Week

Participants of Silent Run 2.0 hit the road after being flagged off at the compound of MBKS.

KUCHING: Some 1,500 runners participated in Silent Run 2.0 at the compound of Kuching South City Council (MBKS) here yesterday.

Organised by Sarawak Deaf Sports Association (SSDeaf), the run was officiated by Batang Sadong MP Dato Sri Nancy Shukri who said the last week of September is known as Deaf Awareness Week, during which a variety of events are organised to promote awareness on issues faced by the deaf.

Nancy speaks to reporters after flagging off the runners.

“This (run) is one of the methods for them (SSDeaf) to raise funds to assist in carrying out their activities.

“As part of the community, we should also provide cooperation and assistance in lifting the standard of living of the deaf community,” she told reporters after the flag-off ceremony.

Meanwhile, SSDeaf president Wong Tuong Chui said the run had created an understanding of the impact of deafness on communication in our everyday lives.

Among those present yesterday were Silent Runners Club president and organising chairman Dexter Nuing Lyrym Paong, and SSDeaf deputy president Ko Ming Liang who is also SSDeaf Central Region president.
