SIBU: The demolition of illegal structures including chicken coops and cages in Sibu Jaya had to be called off yesterday due to heavy downpour.

The 25-strong enforcement team from Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC), spearheaded by SRDC assistant secretary Hiu Kee Sing together with police, had to postpone the operation when the heavy rain continued.

As a result, SRDC chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai said the operation would resume next week.

According to him, the demolition is necessary following the issuance of many notices and reminders to errant poultry owners.

“The backyard rearing of poultry and putting up chicken coops in front of houses are getting serious in Sibu Jaya housing areas,” Sempurai said, pointing out that the SRDC had been receiving complaints and reports from residents about the foul smell and flies.

“The council has to act within the Cleanliness By-laws. We cannot compromise the health of the residents and the hygiene of the housing areas,” he said.

It is known that the SRDC allows the keeping of chickens and other domesticated birds for the consumption of women during their post-partum period, or for festive celebrations, but the number may not go beyond a flock of five.
