PUTRAJAYA: There is a need to continuously check on the enablers for the higher education ecosystem including funding, governance, innovation, internationalisation, online learning and delivery, said Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik.

“Only then can we achieve the outcomes for our key stakeholders in the higher education system of holistic, entrepreneurial and balanced graduates, talent excellence, quality TVET (technical and vocational education and training) graduates and Malaysia as a nation of lifelong learners,” he said.

Maszlee said these enablers and outcomes addressed key policy and performance issues in the system, particularly with regard to quality and efficiency, as well as global trends that were disrupting the higher education landscape.

In his speech read out by Deputy Director-General of Higher Education (Public Higher Institutions) , Ministry of Education, Professor Dr Noor Azizi Ismail at the sixth Global Higher Education Forum (GHEF) 2018 here yesterday, Maszlee said there was much that Malaysia could do to enable global prominence.

“These among others encourage more inter-ministerial and agency cooperation by operationalising a communication platform with the required political will to make smoother admission and immigration processes for international students coming to Malaysia,” he said.

Maszlee said Malaysia could also develop a National Consortium of Public Universities for education diplomacy to identify new markets for sustainable international student population growth.

Another initiative was a leverage on Malaysian democracy and multiculturalism as a success story and as a brand of global prominence of its education, he said.

“We also can modernise our public university’s hosting and hospitality of international students and their dependents by providing quality and choice of on-campus accommodation solutions,” he added.

The two-day GHEF which began yesterday sought to discuss and share experiences of the challenges and developments in the dynamic ecosystem of higher education and how knowledge, industry and humanity can propel higher education to greater heights in a challenging global environment. — Bernama
