MIRI: The war against rabies continued with free mass rabies vaccination programme held here over the weekend, with a total of 866 dogs being vaccinated in the two-day campaign.

The programme organised by Veterinary Services Department commenced on Saturday at three designated locations namely Taman Awam Miri, Lutong Basketball Court and Taman Bulatan in Pujut, from 9am to 4pm. It continued the next day at the same venues.

Divisional veterinary officer Dr Sylmie Al-Harir revealed that more dogs were vaccinated on Sunday compared to the previous day which numbered 363. A total of 503 were vaccinated yesterday.

The team at Taman Awam Miri recorded the highest number of dogs vaccinated on both days, 164 on Saturday and 208 the following day, while Taman Bulatan in Pujut recorded the lowest with 58 and 116 on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Meanwhile, the number of dogs vaccinated in Lutong Basketball Court saw an increase of 38 heads, from 141 on Saturday to 179 on Sunday.

Based on these records, the number of dogs given free vaccinations in Miri District from January to Oct 14 this year stand at 9, 751.

Dr Sylmie reminded those who had missed the chance to vaccinate their dogs during the campaign to do so at the Veterinary Services Department at Pelita Commercial Centre, which operates from 8.30am to 4.30pm on weekdays.

Alternatively, they can also participate in the upcoming free mass rabies vaccination programme, which will take place at Permyjaya Tudan and Desa Senadin, next weekend.
