SIBU: A district police chief serving in Sarawak was yesterday released on bail by a magistrates’ court here following the expiry of a four-day remand.

The suspect exits the courtroom after the hearing.

The 42-year-old OCPD who holds the rank of DSP was arrested last week by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for allegedly receiving bribes amounting to RM40,000 from an illegal lottery operator.

Magistrate Muhammad Faizal Che Saad released him on MACC’s bail.

The suspect was represented by counsel Darren Ling.

A source from MACC Sarawak said investigation of the alleged bribe was on-going under Section 17A of the MACC Act, 2009.

Earlier press reports said the OCPD was arrested by MACC at a restaurant in Sibu on Oct 11.

Following his arrest, a woman police inspector in Selangor was also arrested by MACC from Putrajaya the following night after having her statement recorded over the same case.

It is alleged that the OCPD would direct the illegal lottery operator to transfer money to the inspector’s bank account, which would then be remitted into his bank account by the inspector.

The inspector had served together with the OCPD when she was based in Sarawak.
