MIRI: Some 190 community leaders, members of village security and development committees (JKKK), local entrepreneurs and youth representatives took part in Randau Digital Workshop held at a leading hotel here on Friday.

The one-day workshop themed ‘Towards a Digital Community’ was organised by Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) in collaboration with Angkatan Zaman Mansang (Azam) Sarawak and Miri Resident Office in line with the state digital economy development strategy.

The programme was the second in a series of workshops to promote digital inclusivity.

The first workshop was held in Limbang last month.

“This workshop aimed to familiarise and educate grassroots communities on development strategies and trends under the digital economy agenda.

“With increased awareness and knowledge, local stakeholders will be ready for future development in the digital economy and Sarawak will see more active participation from the local communities,” said Azam general manager Rosalind Yang Misieng.

Rosalind emphasised that apart from generating awareness on the importance and benefits of digital economy among participants who are part of the state’s development front liners, the workshop also equipped them with relevant knowledge and networking to mobilise their respective communities to initiate activities that can leverage on digital economy.

The sessions were conducted by industry players, experts as well as government representatives from Ministry of

Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Sarawak, Department of Agriculture Sarawak, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) and Pustaka Negeri Sarawak.

Among the key sectors discussed at the workshop were capacity-building on digital economy, e-tourism, technopreneurship and digital agriculture.

Sharing sessions were also held with local e-business entrepreneur Neng Kho Razali on ‘Rekaan Borneo menerusi Pasaran Antarabangsa Melalui Platform Digital’ and another local entrepreneur Rita on the potential of rural homestays.

Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin held a dialogue with the participants on the theme

‘Peranan Pemimpin dalam Menggerak Masyarakat Akar Umbi ke Arah Ekonomi Digital’ to provide an opportunity for the people to voice out and discuss their concerns about digital economy initiatives and development. He later officiated at the closing ceremony.

In his speech, Lee reminded participants to share and apply information and knowledge gained from the workshop with the community in their respective areas.

“Do not keep the information you obtained only to yourself.

Do some sharing sessions with communities in your villages so they understand as well.

“We want the people to be aware and understand digital technology including Sarawak Pay application,” said Lee.
