KUCHING: Eye Specialist Centre (ESC) and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) Ophthalmology Department will be conducting a free eye screening session from 8am to noon on Nov 4.

The session, held in conjunction with World Sight Day and the recent new extension of ESC, will be conducted at ESC premises at Panovel Commercial Centre, Simpang Tiga here (Jalan Simpang Tiga-Jalan Mendu junction).

ESC medical director and consultant eye surgeon Dr Dennis Kong said many eye diseases are silent and do not show symptoms until the later stages.

“Therefore, screening is very important to diagnose the disease early as well as to get treatment started so as to prevent further progression of eye disease,” he said in a press statement.

He encouraged those with symptoms such as blurred vision, floaters or flashing lights; family history of glaucoma; diabetics who need annual eye checks, or have a history of significant eye trauma, to go for the screening.

“Very myopic or short-sighted patients as well as those who are above 60 and never had eye examination are also encouraged to come to the free screening.”

Dr Kong, along with fellow consultant eye surgeons Prof Dr Lim Lik Thai, Dr Lim Ching Wei and Dr Lo Sheau Kang, will be present during the screening.

“Appointment is not necessary and members of the public can just walk in and proceed to register themselves on the first floor of ESC.”

He, however, said that during the screening some patients may have dilation of pupils which will cause blurred vision, and thus advised them to contact a family member or friend to accompany and drive them back.

He added that door gifts sponsored by pharmaceutical companies will also be given to those who attend the eye screening.
