MIRI: The proposal to amend the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) aimed to formulate risk assessment and opportunity is now in the final discussion stage with the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) deputy director-general Saiful Azhar Mohd Said said the proposed amendment is expected to be tabled during next month’s Parliament sitting.

He disclosed this when speaking at a seminar entitled ‘Behavioral Safety: The Way Forward’ at a hotel here yesterday, jointly organised by Miri Occupational Safety & Health Practitioners’ Society (MOSHPS) and Malaysian Society of Occupational Safety and Health (MSOSH).

“Efforts to provide a safe place particularly at working area should not be left to the government alone  as industry players should also take a lead in promoting occupational health and safety practices in their respective areas.

“In occupational health and safety practices, the government of course has to play its role not only to facilitate but also assist the industry players and tell them what to do as well as making occupational health and safety into a culture of practice.”

On MOSHPS, he wanted it to be a role model for others to emulate and urged it to promote occupational health and safety practices to minimise accidents at the work place.

More than 60 participants are taking part in the two-day seminar.

On the first day yesterday, two speakers from MSOSH Andrew Lee Salin and Mohamad Aliasman Morshidi talked on Leadership-WHY and Managing from Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Culture Perspectives respectively.

Today, MOSHPS chairman Dr Julian Jolly will talk on ‘Safety Culture: A Commitment From You’ followed by Dr Adeline Wong from Curtin Malaysia who will talk on ‘Behavioral Dilemma on Workplace Safety’.

Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin who is also MOSHPS patron will be the guest of honour to officiate at the seminar closing ceremony today.
