The event isaimed to raise RM80,000 to cover the cost of running the centre at Lorong Laksamana 8 off Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho, said a press release yesterday.

“Our objective is also to increase public awareness of the culture, life and language of the deaf community,” it added.

The centre organises various projects such as training workshops and motivational camps every year for the deaf community to learn new skills as well as improve their social and living skills.

“The centre is constantly looking for job opportunities for the deaf adults,” the statement said.

While the centre offers car wash service, tailoring and sign language class, the society encourages the community to take up sign language class.

At present, the centre has two sign language teachers Ernest Ting and Yeo.

During the event on Sunday, members of the public can get to meet the deaf community to have a better understanding of their culture. Videos and photos will also be shown to enlighten the community on the progress of the deaf community in the city.

The centre also appealed for support from the general public, companies and organisations to donate cash and kind not only for the event but on-going activities of the society in future.
