KUCHING: The state government sees the possibility to cover the cost of tourism projects at Mount Serembu and Brook Heritage Site as the projects only cost RM1.6 million.

Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin said the projects have been postponed previously because it involves federal government fund.

“Our ministry (Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Youth and Sports) has referred this matter to the federal ministry (Ministry of Tourism and Culture).

“We hope the federal ministry does not cancel this project because it only costs RM1.6 million,” said Lee in reply to a question by Serembu assemblyman Miro Simuh.

Lee who is also Senadin assemblyman revealed the project that has been planned to be implemented this year under the third round of the 11th Malaysia Plan (RMK11) involving federal government fund.

“We are just waiting for the answer. We (the ministry) are looking at the possibility of financing this project by the state government,” said Lee.

Lee said Mount Serembu has high potential as one of the tourism products that could attract tourists to Sarawak.

The project also involves the construction of tourist information centre, souvenir shop and handicraft gallery as well as upgrading of bamboo bridge, pedestrian walkway, rest room and toilet.
