KUCHING: The Community Development Department (Kemas) is emphasising teaching English at its preschools and nurseries.

According to Kuching Division Kemas officer Lindawati Padiel, in Kemas nurseries, they begin teaching English to the children as young as 2 years old.

“English Fun Learning (EFL) is now being taught in Kemas Tabika and Taska. Our Kemas teachers regularly attend training to enable them to deliver the curriculum more effectively for our future generations,” she said.

Apart  from  that,  Kemas  is also  involved  in  co-curricular activities  to  discover  talent  and self-potential  among  children.

These are reflected through the Hari Potensi which is held yearly in Kemas, alternating between talent (indoor) and sports (outdoor).

She said this year is the talent programme year, and Kemas has held nine programmes and three competitions at the state and national level.

“The children’s group from Tabika Kemas IPK Badaruddin was  the  champion  for  their  work in  designs at the  state  level  and will  represent Sarawak  at the national level in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan  from Nov 22-24 this year,” she disclosed.

In the event yesterday, 493 Taska and Tabika children from Tupong, Semariang and Satok under Petra Jaya Parliamentary constituency, received certificates for completing their kindergarten studies from Sarawak Kemas Department.
