SIBU: Two consumers here suspected that the rice which they had bought could be fake based on its look and texture after it was cooked.

“The rice did not look genuine after I cooked it,” said one of them who spoke on condition of anonymity.

She recalled: “Though the texture of the rice looked different, I did not suspect anything because it tasted like rice. I only suspected something was not right after noticing my dog did not want to eat it for several days.

“Normally, birds would come and eat the rice dropped on the floor but none had come since I switched to this brand of rice.” She had also noticed that the rice that she cooked five days before turned to jelly after it was left in the refrigerator overnight.

“The rice felt like cotton. I could squeeze the water out when it is wet and the rice became light as a feather when it was dry. If left in the open, the cooked rice could still be in a good state over a few days,” she lamented.

Meanwhile, the other consumer gave a similar account on her observation of the rice. It is learned that they bought different brands of rice from different places.
