SIBU: The realisation of the state’s first ever multi-use park or Sibu Active Youth Space (SAYS) at Sibu Town Square Phase II, inches closer with the state government approving about RM2.5 million.

Assistant Minister of Housing and Public Health Dr Annuar Rapaee, however, explained that the RM2.5 million is meant entirely for construction of the skateboard park.

He said SAYS is a youth-specific space complete with a purpose-built facility to connect people with the community and promote a healthy lifestyle.

Funds will be allocated in stages for other facilities in the this multi-use park such as BMX and rollerblade park, parkour park, calisthenics, wall climbing, open theatre, and enclosed space for E-sports activities.

He added that the park measuring 15-meter wide and 100-meter long will have wifi connection.

“Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) will be the implementing agency for this project and we thank them for their approval that has enabled the facility to be built.

“We will make sure the facility will be fully utilised and become an attraction for the youth.

“The objective of such park is to create a multi-use park and family space for all ages to enjoy,” he told reporters after a symbolic handing over of approval of allocation from Sarawak government for the project to SMC, represented by its deputy chairperson Rogayah Jamain.

Asked when the project is expected to start, Dr Annuar, who is also Assistant Minister of Housing and Public Health, said a consultant would have to be appointed first.

“Once, we have done that, the tendering process will follow before the commencement of the construction works,” added the Nangka assemblyman.
