KUCHING: Over 200 seedlings of hibiscus and foxtail palms were planted along the stretch of Jalan Setia Raja near the Samajaya Nature Reserve here yesterday.

The planting event, initiated by Kuching South City Council (MBKS), was graced by the Chief Minister’s wife who is also Sarawak Badan Amal Tenaga Isteri-Isteri (Sabati) president Datin Patinggi Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang.

A total of 115 hibiscus seedlings and 92 foxtail palm seedlings were planted along that stretch of road as part of MBKS’ efforts to beautify the city.

MBKS mayor Datuk James Chan, in his address, said the Sarawak government had placed emphasis on keeping the environment green and preserving nature reserve in the state.

He said this is a reason why city dwellers can get to enjoy fresh air and embrace nature right in the city centre here.

He thus called on citizens to appreciate what the city has to offer and at the same time give their best to preserve the environment.

According to Chan, many advanced cities across the globe see skyscrapers and big population but not many have access to green environment and fresh air.

Given this, he said the people of Kuching must shoulder the responsibility of looking after the nature they have.

Meanwhile, Juma’ani said Sabati focused on not just charitable activities to reach out to the less fortunate and the needy but it also promoted preservation of the environment.

She was delighted to note that the planting event had received good response from various parties including students from Limkokwing University of Creative Technology here.

Juma’ani hoped that Sabati together with MBKS would organise more similar activities in future.
