SIBU: Sarawak’s first ever multi-use park Sibu Active Youth Space (SAYS) on Sibu Town Square Phase II, is inching closer to reality with the approval of RM2.5 million from the Sarawak government for the project.

However, Assistant Minister of Housing and Public Health Dr Annuar Rapaee says the amount is meant for entire construction of a skateboard park.

According to him, SAYS is a youth-specific space complete with purpose-built facilities, aimed at connecting members of the local community and also promoting a healthy lifestyle to them.

Funds will be allocated in stages for other facilities across the s multi-use park such as the BMX and rollerblade park, a ‘parkour’ area, calisthenics and wall-climbing zones, an open theatre, and an enclosed space for E-sports.

It is learnt that the park, covering an area of 15m by 100m, would also have WiFi coverage.

“Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) will be the implementing agency for this project and we thank them for their approval for this facility to be built.

“We will make sure that the facility will be fully utilised and become an attraction for the youths.

“The objective of such park is to create a multi-use park and family space, for people of all ages to enjoy,” he told reporters after the symbolic handover of the approved allocation for the project from Sarawak government to SMC – represented by its deputy chairperson Rogayah Jamain – yesterday.

Asked when the project would commence, Dr Annuar – also Assistant Minister of Education and Technological Research and Nangka assemblyman – said a consultant would need to be appointed first.

“Once we have done that, the tender process will follow before the commencement of the works,” added Dr Annuar.
