KUCHING: The compensation for the late fireman Yahya Ali who drowned with five other colleagues during a search and rescue (SAR) operation in an unused mining pool in Selangor last month, has been given to his family in Mukah.

Fire and Rescue director general, Datuk Mohd Hamdan Wahid said that the compensations have been given on October 24, which was handed by the Housing and Local Government Minister, Zuraida Kamaruddin to all the families of officers who had passed, including to the late Yahya’s family.

Mohd Hamdan added, that there were 10 types of compensations given to the officers’ families and the late Yahya was one of the officers who received the most compensation.

“Among those (compensations) under the Fire and Rescue Department, he was also given a ex gratia, which is an indemnity paid to the person who perished while doing their job,” says Mohd Hamdan.

He said this after officiating the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department Assistant Directors Meeting, at one of the local hotels here, this morning.

Apart from that, he said, among other indemnities paid out to the late Yahya’s family, were from a group insurance and a ‘Khairat Kematian’ from the Malaysian government, another insurance from Bomba Cooperative, an insurance from the union, Bomba Welfare Association, Sarawak State Government and donations from the public.

“At least one family is getting not less than RM300,000.00 and above, to help them ease their burden for their loss.

“We are also looking into getting an affordable home for the bereaved families who have not got a house yet and even welfare for their going to school children,” he said on these proposed plans.
