SERIAN: A total RM9 million will be allocated for works to upgrade the Serian Division Mosque, said Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said the site of the mosque would be handed over to the Mosque Management Board through the Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS) to facilitate the upgrading works.

‘’The state government has a plan to build a new mosque in a different location in Serian but fear the low number of worshippers due to its quite distant location compared to the existing (Serian Division) mosque.

‘’I agree that the (existing) mosque be retained here and enlarged looking at the current development in Bandar Serian. A RM9 million allocation will be approved to enlarge the mosque,’’ he said in a ceremony to hand over a hearse to the Serian Muslim Welfare Trust Board at the Serian Division Mosque here today.

Abang Johari also announced a RM500,000 allocation for maintenance work on the mosque. – Bernama
