KUALA LUMPUR: Telekom Malaysia (TM) is seen not only as a major player in the country’s telecommunications industry but also with the potential to play an effective role globally, the Dewan Rakyat was told yesterday.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo said this was due to the fact that TM has many advantages, especially in terms of infrastructure such as submarine cable.

However, he said, he wants TM to be more sensitive and to respond to every complaint from its customers regarding the company’s services.

“The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) issued a statement that 8,000 complaints were received and all the complaints came to me on Twitter every day.

“I am happy to see a statement from TM saying there are problems related to Streamyx,” he said when winding up the debate at the policy stage on the 2019 budget for his ministry in the House.

On Monday, TM issued a statement that the company was concerned about the problems faced by its customers and had given its explanation in response to the complaints pertaining to its Streamyx broadband service.

The company was also looking forward to working with the government for a win-win situation to address problems faced by Streamyx customers.

Meanwhile, Gobind said the government is ready to help TM to solve the problems faced by the company.

He said it is also part of the preparations to face the Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0) where there is a need to create a strong infrastructure system for the country.

On the question from Datuk Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah (BN-Lenggong) with regard to the rumours that there will be a lay-off of TM employees due to the price reduction of broadband service that has affected the company’s business, Gobind said TM should look for profitable business models that would not adversely affect its employees. — Bernama
