Miri: Some 1,000 festival goers are expected to converge here for the 5th Miri Country Music Festival (MCMF) at Coco Cabana today.

Festival advisor Gracie Geikie said about 40 per cent from the festival goers would be guests from Peninsular Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore.

“Although it is a one-day event for this year, let’s liven up this festival and carry out the momentum of the MCMF 2018,” she stated in a joint press conference on MCMF at Mega Hotel yesterday.

Gracie said the annual festival would be held over two days from next year which would be held on Nov 22-23 at the same venue.

She said preparation has already begun including organising talent search in Sabah and Miri.

The successful band would be given the opportunity to perform during the MCMF next year.

Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin gave his strong support to the organising of the music festival in the city.

Lee who is also Senadin assemblyman wants the MCMF to be another signature music festival for the city besides the jazz festival.

He also hopes the organiser will arrange for more side activities such as horse riding for the festival goers.

Lee wants to see the MCMF continues to contribute more positive tourism impact for the city.

In the past four years, MCMF organised by Place Borneo Sdn Bhd had attracted festival goers from all walks of life.

Debuting in 2014, the MCMF has been acclaimed as the first country and western music festival in Malaysia and said to be the only one in South East Asia.

Throughout the years, MCMF has featured many local and international bands with different styles of music where some of the bands come from Australia, United States of America (USA), Singapore, Indonesia, Czech Republic and even European expatriates working in Asian Region.

For this year, the festival will be featuring seven local and international bands such as Delilah Rose & The Gunslingers (Australia), Mel & Rani (Singapore/Indonesia), Joe Ferdinand F&F (Singapore), Raggy (Penang), Ady Wow & Maha (Sabah) and two local bands from Sarawak- Mountain Wind Band and Country Road Band.

Coco Cabana Miri has been selected as MCMF’s official venue and Mega Hotel is the official hotel for the music festival.

It is also an event endorsed and supported by Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth & Sports Sarawak and Sarawak Tourism Board (STB).
